Our Charity As Masons we are called upon to better society and be charitable men. Many of us have chosen the rodeo as a good and rewarding organization to accomplish these goals. Our brothers give of their time and money to help the rodeo be successful in their goal to help educate the youth of Texas. In 2010 the annual educational commitment of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was over 12 million dollars which included over 2000 scholarships. During Cowboy Lodge we pass the hat to collect enough cash to sponsor a calf or two for each years Calf Scramble. Calf Donation Recipients and show results. 1998 show recipient was Kari Galm from Heltis, Texas. Kari purchased a Maine-Anjou heifer and placed 1st in her class, and Reserve Grand Champion at the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show. 1999 show recipient was Lacy Brinkman from Marfa, Texas. Lacy purchased a show horn heifer and placed third at the Jackpot Show in Marfa. Lacy also won the Grand Champion Buckle at the Presidio County Livestock Show in Marfa and the Showmanship Award. 2000 recipient was Brody Trotter from Nacogdoches. Brody purchase a Charolais heifer for his project calf to bring back to HLS&R in 2001. Brody placed third in his class in Tyler, first in his class in Nacogdoches and first in the Garrison FFA Show. 2001 recipient was Jill Wabbe from Egypt, Texas just outside of Wharton. Jill received her certificate by placing 6th out of 308 in the heifer judging contest the first week of the 2001 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. She Placed 2nd in her class at the Wharton Boosters Prospect Show in Navasota, Texas. His heifer is a Santa Gertrudis. 2003 Calf Scramble winner was Halei Leann McCary from Bronson, Texas 2004 Calf Scramble winner was Thomas David Gibson from Springtown, Texas. Thomas placed third in class in the Weatherford Show, eight out of twenty in Dallas, second place in Denton and forth place in the West Texas State Fair. His heifer is a Short Horn. 2005 recipients (yes TWO!) were Kathy Wagner of Channelview, Texas and Danielle Arnold of Panhandle, Texas. Both recipients received their certificate for judging. Kathy’s heifer was a Santa Gertrudis and she took first place in the 2006 Houston Show. Danielle’s heifer was a Maine Anjou.
